Pilates

Pilates is a way of life. It’s a fusion of mind and body.

Pilates is a beautiful way to tune your mind and your body. The quality of movement is more important than quantity of repetitions. Through proper breathing we learn to move with power and efficiency with little stress. This will assist in correct spinal/pelvic alignment as you concentrate on smooth, flowing movement.

The patterns of Pilates exercises allows each student to modify according to their physical ability and range of motion. Whether practicing on mat, standing or apparatus the exercises range from beginner to advanced with an increase in intensity as your body strengthens. With time and practice you attain body awareness, good posture with graceful movement.

Pilates lengthens, strengthens and improves muscle elasticity leading to greater joint mobility with range of motion.

Key principles of Pilates:
Rhythm and Breathing
Control and Concentration
Centered and Balanced
Relaxation and Whole Body Movement

All movement radiates from the Center or core of the body in Pilates. We strive for a perfectly “Balanced Body”. As we learn to see and feel balance we can overcome many patterns of movement that cause stress on our muscles and joints through making conscious changes in our physical and mental being.
Rhythm in Pilates, as in equestrian sports, is the key to flowing from movement to movement or pattern to pattern with seamless transitions. It truly creates the sense of flow.

Breathing with a focused inhale and exhale initiates the movement of every exercise. Learning to use our core muscles and pelvic floor for breathing creates far greater strength and integrity of the work. With time and repetition we allow our breathing patterns to assist us in every thing we do.
Control teaches us to do our exercises with precision and proper form rather than high numbers of repetitions. It is our mind that helps the body have controlled state of being. Once again showing the importance of the mind in helping the body to be effective.

Concentration is the vital component to a strong Physical/Mind connection as we perform each movement with acute awareness of how our muscles and joints are moving or stabilizing.

Relaxation is an important piece of the training as we learn how to use the right amount of effort for each movement or exercise we strive to do. Allowing the correct muscles to work while doing an exercise will greatly enhance our core and overall strength.

Pilates integrates the whole body and mind through experiencing flowing and functional movement with purpose and clarity.
